PPDG
will develop, acquire and deliver vitally needed Grid-enabled tools for
data-intensive requirements of particle and nuclear physics experiments.
Richard Mount, Stanford Linear Accelerator Center and Harvey Newman, Caltech
(HENP Principal Investigators)
Miron Livny, University of Wisconsin (Computer Science Principal Investigator)
Ruth Pordes, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and Douglas Olson, Ernesto Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory (Project Coordinators)
This award provides funding to participants from High Energy and Nuclear Physics experiments and Computer Scientists at six national labs and three universities:
-
ATLAS - a Toroidal LHC ApparatuS at Cern in Europe. One of the main goals of which is to discover and study the Higgs particle.
-
BaBar - the detector built at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Laboratory to study the millions of B mesons produced by the PEP-II storage ring.
-
CMS - the Compact Muon Solenoid detector at CERN, one of whose goals is to find and study the Higgs particle (with ATLAS).
-
D0
- experiment at the D0 colliding beam interaction region at Fermilab to learn more about the top quark, supersymmetry, and the Higgs boson
-
STAR - Solenoidal Tracker At RHIC at the Brookhaven National Laboratory to search for signatures of quark-gluon plasma formation.
-
Thomas Jefferson
National Accelerator Facility - understanding the nucleus using continuous beams of high-energy electrons.
-
Condor - develop, implement, deploy, and evaluate mechanisms and policies that support High Throughput Computing on large collections of distributively owned computing resources.
-
Globus
- developing fundamental technologies needed to build persistent environments that enable software applications to integrate instruments, displays, computational and information resources that are managed by diverse organizations in widespread locations
-
SDM - Scientific Data Management Research Group,
-
Storage Resource Broker - client-server middleware that provides a uniform interface for connecting to heterogeneous data resources over a network and accessing replicated data
sets.
An award of $1.4M was made for FY2001 by HENP together with an award of $1.7M by the Office of Advanced Scientific Computing Research
